diaeresis (also dieresis)

n (pl -eses / -Esi:z; -E9siz/) mark (eg as in nave) placed over a vowel to show that it is sounded separately from the vowel before it 分音符（标於元音之上以示其与前一元音分别发音, 如naIve中的庄）. Cf 参看 umlaut.
